The Alchemy of Enamelling
Mel Howse's work with fired vitreous enamels has evolved out of a desire to stretch the potential of the medium, utilizing innovative creative techniques and making them expressive in fluid layers on glass or steel. Allowing the nature of the pigments to speak by exploiting their natural behaviour.
One of the most useful properties held by enamels is the performance of the fired medium. Used as glazing within toughened glass units it fits comfortably into new building design and construction. On glass one can exploit the opacity of vitreous enamel. These elements makes it an important progression of glass art within architecture today. Industrial processes in enameled steel create a heat resistance, scratch resistance: chemical, fire and vandal resistant surface whose colour cannot fade. Hence it can also form the outer skin of a building as well as having artistic potential.
