Foyer Art Glass
Location: St James Hospital, Portsmouth
Architect: Portsmouth City Primary Care NHS Trust
Size: 1300 x 1700 (x4)
Installed: July 2007
Description: Enamelled toughened glass with antique glass etched surface. Fire-resistant secondary glazing.
The commission comprised a triptych of panels for the hospital reception plus a further lightbox installation.
The design for a triptych had to fulfil the two functions of bringing art into the hospital's entrance space whilst bringing natural light into this previously poorly lit area. The work succeeds in meeting both needs.
Special care was required to ensure all installations met building and hospital fire regulations plus be sufficiently robust in this live mental healthcare facility. The purely abstract artwork also has to accord with the more subjective and psychological parameters for art work in mental health environments.
